Icon Tutorial #1
Introduction
Ohai there! The icon I will be making is very simple. However, it does involve a little bit of selective colouring. But it’s ok if you’re not able to do that because it’s not mandatory. You can manually change certain colours if you would like.

First I started off with a blank canvas. Then I spent some time looking through my icon textures and found THIS one which I liked, and haven’t used yet. So I pasted it into my canvas.

I knew I wanted a small model to fit into the icon. So I searched some editorials until I found the photograph I liked. I chose THIS one. I cut out the background using a mask layer [Right click >> New Mask Layer >> Show All]. Then I resized her so that her height would be a few pixels smaller than the height of the canvas. About 80px. Afterward I sharpened the base image just a TINY bit.

I didn’t like how she was positioned after I pasted her on the cutout. So I mirrored the image [Image >> Mirror] and moved her to the left and slightly downward.

I thought the icon was missing something, and I wanted to add something shiny. So I looked through my icon textures again and found THIS one which I liked. I pasted it as a new layer and set the blend mode to LIGHTEN.

Personally, I didn’t like the purple coloured dress. To me the colours clash with the turquoise in the shiny texture. So I merged all the layers and copied the canvas. Then I opened Photoshop and pasted the image. I set a new selective colour layer.
Blues
Cynan: +100
Magenta: -100
Yellow: +100

Cyan: +100
Magenta: -100
Yellow: +100
I copied the image from PS and pasted it as a new layer back in PSP8. If you can’t use selective colouring it’s ok. You can manually use the paintbrush to paint the dress a turquoise color and then play around with the blend modes until you get the colour you like.

I still felt like something was missing. I wanted to give a very subtle splash of colour. So I created THIS texture. I then colourised it to a medium-dark fusia colour using manual colour correction. Adjust >> Color Balance >> Manual Colour Correction.

If you don’t have this feature, it’s ok. You can just manually colourise it, or use whichever method you’re comfortable with.
Afterward I pasted my newly-made texture as a new layer and set the blend mode to SCREEN.

And voila! I’m finished. Pretty simple. If you have any questions regarding this tutorial feel free to ask me by leaving a comment below. Lastly, don’t forget to credit back! ^_^
